"My name is Ian and I’m the Chief Technology Officer with Fio Rapid Response Group. Throughout my career, I’ve worked in cardiology, radiology and infectious diseases—the latter being what brought me to the airport.
It’s an all-Canadian crew when it comes to the airport’s COVID-19 testing lab—we have three different companies providing equipment and Fio was asked to be the “glue” for these equipment vendors and help run the lab itself.
This is my first working experience in the aviation industry, although I’ve done a tremendous amount of travel so I’m very familiar with many airports, including Pearson. It’s very unique that this testing lab has been put up at the airport—the idea that we’ve enabled essential travelers to show up 3 hours before their flight, get a test and get on the plane is totally unique. It’s been a great achievement to put it all together in a very short period of time. It’s been going really well so far; the swab time, the time people are spending with the nurses and the wait time for results are all decreasing.
It’s been very important to be able to have a testing system that works in real-time. My favourite part about this work is how much gratification it gives me to help people. Everything I’ve done in my career has been about helping people get healthy and stay healthy. Being a part of public health is so rewarding, especially now with such a universal problem.
I think this is a huge step in the recovery of the airport. Passengers are so thankful the service is being offered and how easy the process is. The one-stop shop has made a huge difference for people. We’re here to serve them and get them on their flights as quickly as possible."
