TORONTO - In response to the Transportation Safety Board’s (TSB) safety issues investigation examining incursions on runways 06L/24R and 06R/24L at Toronto Pearson announced in May, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) welcomed the study. The GTAA is cooperating fully with the TSB with an end goal of constantly improving safety conditions at Toronto Pearson to protect all passengers and employees.
An incursion at an airport is defined by Transport Canada as “any occurrence at an airport involving the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle or person on the protected area of a surface designated for the landing and takeoff of aircraft”.
In June 2012, the GTAA completed an investigation into runway incursions on runways 06L/24R and 06R/24L, for incidents that took place between 2004 and 2011.
The following changes have been made on or around runways 06L/24R and 06R/24L since 2012:
- Introduction of enhanced taxiway centerline, enhanced taxi‐holding position markings, painted mandatory hold signs for all taxiways applicable to runway 06L/24R south of the runway;
- Permanent change made to lighting intensity for stopbar settings – resulting in more intense lighting during day and night operations;
- All mandatory illuminated instruction signs south of runway 06L/24R have been upgraded to LED (light-emitting diode) lighting.
The GTAA will continue to work with TSB, the sixty-plus air carriers operating at Toronto Pearson and NAV Canada, which provides air traffic control services, to ensure the safe operation of the airport.
